Dr. Nyesha C. Black


Dr. Nyesha C. Black is the Director of Demographics and Assistant Research Personnel at the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama. She also serves as the state lead for the U.S. Census Bureau’s Federal State Cooperative for Population Estimates and Projections.  
 
Nyesha has spent several years in academia, non-profit, and government sectors, including a faculty position in the Sociology Department at UAB, and as a postdoctoral fellow in the College of Preventive Medicine at UAB. She has also worked on projects with the Economic Research Service division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 
 
Dr. Black holds a Ph.D. and master’s degree in demography and sociology from The Pennsylvania State University, where she was awarded a fellowship from the National Science Foundation. She also earned an economics degree from the Culverhouse College of Business at the University of Alabama.  
 
Dr. Black remains civically engaged. She holds a six-year appointment on the Birmingham Planning Commission and the Zoning Advisory Committee, in which she reviews and makes recommendations for planning-related issues and zoning changes at the municipal-level. In addition, she has a three-year appointment to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute's Board of Directors.
